Please voice your opinion on the mayor’s actions. Sam Adams has promised to be more honest, but has yet to do anything of the kind. Just this weekend the Willamette Week reported that Sam Adam’s spokesman Wade Nkrumah resigned because he “felt he couldn't work for someone who continued to lie.”
The Portland Police Association, when asking Mayor Adams for his resignation, stated “As a sitting commissioner, mayoral candidate, and sitting mayor, you violated several rules in the City's code of ethics which were adopted while you were Mayor Katz's chief of staff.” It is our belief that any other city employee would have been fired immediately, and that the only reason he has not been fired is that there is no one above him to do so.
Again, in the words of the PPA, “With protests mounting on both sides of this issue, I think you can see that there is a division being created here that is not in the best interest of Portland. Please, for the benefit of Portland, consider resigning immediately. Don't drag this issue on for months.”
Our Mayor is trying to wait out the outrage over his deceit and abuse of power…we the citizens must express our feelings. By not relinquishing his role as leader and figurehead of Portland, Mayor Adams has once again put his own interest above that of the city, despite his assurance that “if it's in the city's best interest ... I'll resign."
There is no oversight of the mayor. Any other city employee would have been fired for breaching the city’s Code of Ethics. The City Council must act, and we must encourage them to do so.
What do we do now?
1) First, we continue to let the City Council know of our disappointment, and request them to act.
2) Second, we correct the few Portlanders who mistakenly believe this is about sex and someone’s personal life. This controversy is about rules of conduct, ethics, and leadership…all of which were violated by Mayor Sam Adams.
To the first part, you must show up at the city council meeting (click here for details), to show your support and if willing, to speak. If you don’t wish to speak, please come anyway. At 9 O’clock, you may sign up to speak regarding some of the items on the agenda. For example, last week, several individuals signed up to speak about appointments to the Citizen Review Commission, and asked the Mayor and Council how Portlanders could trust any appointments that the Mayor made. Any issue that requires the residents of Portland to trust the mayor require your attention!
For our information campaign, www.notwithsam.com will soon post templates and mailing addresses for writing to the editors of various Portland newspapers. There will be outlines of the abuses committed by the mayor.
Success depends on you speaking out, or the mayor doing the right thing. Obviously, we are depending on you because we can’t depend on him.
